What is locum tenens?

The term “locum tenens” (Latin) means “one holding a place.” It is the term used to describe the placement of physicians and healthcare providers into temporary positions. Here are a few reasons practices and facilities seek locum tenens:

  • CME, maternity leave, and vacation coverage
  • Short-term help while a permanent physician search is underway
  • Hospital or group expansion
  • Unexpected physician absence
  • Part-time needs that don’t merit a full-time employee

Who can be a locum tenens provider?

There are temporary positions for physicians who are in various stages of their career- from residents looking to broaden their experience, to retired physicians who would like to practice part-time. We also place nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are looking for a temp, or a temp-to-perm situation. Some reasons you may find locum tenens work appealing include:

Nothing! Our job is provide hospitals and medical practices with qualified medical professionals like you. All we require on your end is the proper documentation and credentials so you may be covered under our medical malpractice insurance.

How much will I earn as a locum tenens provider?

Assignments can vary greatly in terms of compensation as each speciality is different, however, providers working locum tenens are independent contractors and usually earn close to, or over, market wages for their specialty. 

What are the benefits of working through All Star Recruiting?

Besides working with your individually assigned consultant, we arrange and cover the cost for all of your travel and housing expenses, pay you with direct deposit, and provide your Malpractice Insurance. Housing options can range from a hotel to a single-family home depending on the location and length of your assignment. We will also pay for any credentialing expenses and license fees you incur while working for us.

How and when do I get paid?

As a locum tenens, you are an independent contractor (1099). We pay our providers twice a month and offer direct deposit. There are many benefits to practicing as a 1099, so consult your tax consultant for more details. 

How does All Star assist with the application process?

We get it. No one likes paperwork, and we've designed our program to make finding your next position a breeze. Once you've completed your basic credentialing packet (about 30-40 minutes of your time,) we will help you complete hospital credentialing information, licensing applications, and any other documentation requirements.  In addition, with your ASR credentialing packet complete, you will receive priority position for jobs offered by All Star Recruiting (most of which are not published for public view.)
