An Analogy: Healthcare Recruiting and Baseball

While recruitment firms have been around for a long time, those in the healthcare specific industry have exploded in recent years and continue to become more competitive every day. That’s not necessarily because there are more hospitals, or even more practicing physicians (in fact, studies are pointing to the reverse,) but the urgent need to find skilled practitioners to staff all these medical facilities is constant. In our current state of society where instant gratification is expected, it’s even more crucial medical facilities have qualified people in place who can provide critical care to patients in need.

Success on the Playing Field 
Once you understand the problem mentioned above, it’s easier to see why both clients and providers would benefit from using a healthcare staffing agency to obtain their professional goals. Now that spring training has concluded and it’s time to play ball, here’s an analogy to explain how our recruiting process works and we fill those roster spots. Think of the client (i.e., hospital, medical group, etc.) as a major league team where the doctor (i.e., surgeon, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, etc.) is the prospective player.

  1. We scout the talent
    Our experienced scouts, aka recruiters, use many scrutinizing methods–including our proprietary CRM database that contains tens-of-thousands of players from all over–to keep a sharp eye on, and pick up prospects. 
  2. We develop them through our farm system
    This is where we ascertain if the strength and conditioning of the player is up to par and their stats are proven (aka qualifications/cv, licensing, and credentialing) so we can determine the right and mutually beneficial team fit.
  3. We invite them to spring training with a MLB™ team
    Knowing “the league” the way we do, and now having built a relationship with the prospective player trying to make it in the bigs, we give him the chance to prove himself on the field by presenting him to a team for a tryout.
  4. We work with a team to extend the player a contract
    The player has come up through our system, the team is interested, and now, (acting much like a sports agent would,) we’ve found them a perfect new professional home that will provide both the team and player a viable chance at the playoffs.
  5. We pick him up in free agency
    If the player becomes a free agent, requires a trade, or his contract is up, we are right there to present him to his next ideal team and make another run for that world series ring.

Remaining Competitive Season after Season
Utilizing industry trends like team-based care and better technology are a big part of how we solve healthcare recruiting issues. More importantly, access to these teams and the relationships we’ve built with them and the prospective players is a huge value when dealing with maldistribution of talent. Keep in mind these teams require a lot of support staff (i.e., first base coaches, locker room managers…aka, mid-levels,) to carry out a successful season. When a team finds they have a roster spot open, we are ready to share new top caliber talent that will add the depth they are looking for and consistently keep them in the playoff hunt year in and year out.

This is particularly useful when considering Locum Tenens work. Just as Willie Mays, “The Say Hey Kid” from Alabama, might never have considered becoming a Hall of Fame athlete playing in New York and San Francisco, that Harvard trained doctor may not have pictured a practice in Missouri as a perfect fit for him to until we brought the opportunity to his attention. So perhaps it’s time to get the ball rolling and try something different this season. Maybe, just maybe, we are your connection to getting on that team with World Series potential you’ve always dreamed of playing for. And that’s your ballgame, folks!
